Chez Tante Athalie - Table d'hôte
About This Spot
Stepping into Chez Tante Athalie feels like slipping into a treasured chapter of Mauritian life, where time slows just enough to savor both the setting and the shared meal. Nestled in the heart of Mon Repos, this table d'hôte invites a sense of nostalgia woven through its warm, inviting atmosphere. Vintage cars, old clocks, and curious artifacts including a small plane quietly punctuate the space, creating an intimate backdrop that sparks stories as much as it does appetite.
The pace here gently unfurls — unhurried and deliberate — allowing guests to soak in not only the flavors but also the subtle soundtrack of local birds and rustling leaves from the garden beyond. Conversations flow alongside the meal, offered in a cozy rhythm where service is thoughtful, if occasionally leisurely, emphasizing connection over rush.
Food at Chez Tante Athalie is a heartfelt expression of the island’s heritage, shaped through soulful recipes handed down and lovingly prepared. The three-course set menu, thoughtfully explained by attentive hosts, unfolds like a story of Mauritius itself: from richly spiced curries and fresh seafood to desserts that evoke simple joys, like ripe papaya paired with vanilla ice cream or bananas kissed by local rum. Each dish carries the kind of authenticity that whispers of home kitchens and island traditions, where every bite invites you to linger a little longer.
The surrounding garden — dotted with vintage treasures — acts as a gentle reminder that this is a place where people and memories are cherished in equal measure. Whether you find yourself captivated by the eclectic collection of bygone memorabilia or the warm smiles of those serving your meal, Chez Tante Athalie offers a grounded, joyful discovery of Mauritian culture beyond the usual tourist pathways.
For those seeking a genuine local experience where history, nature, and good company convene naturally around hearty food, this tucked-away spot in Pamplemousses offers a quiet celebration of island life, savored slowly and sincerely.

Good atmosphere with many objects from the past (vintage cars, old clocks and instruments, and even a small plane!…). You can see local trees and birds in the parking/garden area). The waiters explained the 3 service set menu and answered our questions. Although the service was a bit slow, the homemade dishes and condiments were tasty and authentic, and the dessert was delicious.

I had lunch there woth a few friends in October 2019. We had prebooked the lunch through marideal.mu and thus we had the menu of the day. We took some additional side dishes. The service was excellent and the owner as well as the staff very courteous. I recommend

As entree I had the crab 10/10, main: the chicken with incredible potato’s 10/10.. and for desert the banana 10/10. Honestly one of the BEST restaurants in mauritus. I missed the road to go in. When I got in the yard it was like getting into a museum. Old cars were all around even a plane. As for the restaurants. It is a great place. Authentic Mauritian Creole menu. Food is good. Could have been better. The service was quick and very good. The atmosphere takes you back in time with all the Olsen things around.

Great ambience, very friendly and nice owner & staff. A more extensive menu would have tipped them over into a full 5. The venue and location are really cool. One of the owners is into vintage cars and some of them are displayed on the property. Very instagrammable place.
